Rites Held At Ottoville
Body of Albert Herman Laid To Rest
Funeral services for Albert Herman were held Friday morning in the Immaculate Conception church at
Ottoville at nine o’clock.
Mr. Herman died at his home two and one-half miles northwest of Ottoville, Tuesday at one o’clock p.m.,
following a year’s illness. His death occurred rather unexpectedly.
Mr. Herman was born at Canton on April 3, 1871, the son of Anton and Mary Herman. A few years following
his birth, the Herman family settled on the farm on which Mr. Herman’s death occurred. He was a life-long farmer
and was unmarried.
He is survived by a brother, Louis Herman of Ottoville, four brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Rev. Henry Gerwert officiated at the services and the body was laid to rest in St. Mary’s cemetery.

George Altenburger Died In St. Rita’s Hospital
A Good Citizen
Active In Community, Political Circles
With the death of George E. Altenburger of Ottoville, which occurred in St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima, Tuesday
afternoon at two o’clock, Putnam County lost one of its civic workers and political leaders.
Mr. Altenburger had bee ailing for six months and his condition was regarded as serious for two months
preceding his departure. His death was attributed to a weakened heart condition and other complications. He was
seventy-three years of age.
Born in Auglaize county on August 26, 1867, the son of Peter and Mary Altenburger, the deceased came to
Jackson township, Van Wert county, with his parents when a lad of ten years. He received his education in the
communities where he spent his youth, and in 1894 he came to Ottoville where he served as a clerk in the
general store operated by Winkleman and Vincke for a period of ten years.
In 1904 he opened a general insurance agency and real estate and loan office at Ottoville and continued in
that business until the time of his death. The same year he helped organize the Farmer’s Mutal Aid association at
Ottoville and served as secretary of that organization for a period of thirty years.
He also served as justice of the peace of Monertey township for more than thirty years, and served on the
Putnam countyDemocratic and Executive committees for many years. He was a member of the latter committee at
the time of his death.
In business, civic and political undertakings he was forward and frank in his expressions, and was recognized
for his honesty and sincerity of purpose. He gave freely and willingly to those things, which he believed for the
good of the community and for the welfare of its citizens, and worked untiringly in their behalf. He was a staunch
democrat and worked unceasingly in promoting the interests of that party and its candidates.
On September 29, 1897, he was married at Ottoville to Miss Dorothy Schlagbaum, daughter of Bernard and
Clara Schlagbaum. To this union five children were born, and they survive the passing of a faithful companion
and father. Mrs. Altenburger preceded her husband in death on April 4, 1907.
Children surviving are Misses Alberta and Clara Altenburger, at home; Mrs. Irvin Kalt, Dayton; George J., of
Westminster, Maryland; and Walter of Detroit, Michigan. He also leaves a sister, Miss Flora Altenburger, who
resided with her brother and family; three brothers, Joseph, of Ottoville; F. X. of Cleveland, and Peter of Botkins,
Ohio, and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Magdelene Krabach, of Wapakoneta, and Mrs. John Hohlbein,
of Ottoville, and four brothers, John of Wapakoneta; Louis, of Delphos; Andrew, of Cloverdale and William who
died in infancy.
Mr. Altenburger was a faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic church at Ottoville, and was
affiliated with the St. Joseph’s society of the parish and the Ottoville Catholic Knights of Ohio.
Funeral services will be held in the Ottoville church Friday morning at nine o’clock. Rev. Henry Gerwert, the
pastor, will officiate. The remains will be interred in the parish cemetery.

Peter W. Fuerst Rites Held Monday
Funeral services for Peter W. Fuerst, fifty-three, were held Monday morning in St. John’s church Delphos, and
burial was made in the catholic cemetery at Ottoville.
Mr. Fuerst, a World War veteran, died in St. Rita’s hospital, Lima, Friday night. His death was attributed to
heart trouble. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Henry Utrup, of north of Delphos; Mrs. Frank Gibson, of Lima;
Mrs. Andrew Ellerbrock, of near Kalida; Mrs. Cornelius Bussing, of Blissfield, Michigan, and a brother, John
Fuerst, of Delphos. He was the son of Mr. And Mrs. John Fuerst, who preceded him in death.

Frank Pahl Passed Away
Aged Ottoville Citizen Buried Saturday
Last earthly rites were held in the Immaculate Conception Catholic church at Ottoville, Saturday morning at
nine o’clock, for Frank Pahl, one of the oldest and esteemed citizens of Ottoville. Mr. Pahl passed away
Wednesday after an illness of several days. He was in good health until the Saturday before his death when he
suffered a stroke of paralysis.
He was born near Norwalk, Ohio, on July 14, 1852, the son of Mr. And Mrs. Frank Pahl. He was married to
Amelia Broadman on March 4, 1879. Following their marriage the couple resided for a time at Upper Sandusky,
then moved to a farm southwest of Ottoville, where they resided for a number of years before moving to Ottoville.
Mr. Pahl in his younger years took an active interest in public and community affairs. He served as a trustee
for Monterey township for six years and for more than twenty-five years served on the Ottoville board of
education.
When his death occurred he was eighty-eight years of age. His wife preceded him in death in August, 1922.
He is survivied by three sons, Dr. Ralph Pahl, Delphos; Leo and William Pahl, Traverse City, Michigan; two
daughters, Mrs. Joseph Bowman, Ft. Jennings; Mrs. Ed Kramer, Ottoville; five brothers, thirty-six grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he was preceded into eternity by two sons, two brothers and six sisters.
Father Henry Gerwert, the pastor, officiated at the last rites and interment was made in the parish cemetery.

Death Comes To Young Man
Ottoville Resident Dies Very Suddenly
Gilbert M. Kramer, thirty-eight, resident of Ottoville and Delphos, passed away suddenly Thursday evening of
last week at nine forty-five, at the home of his father, Matt Kramer in Delphos. Coronary Embolism was the cause
of his demise.
Mr. Kramer was born in Canton, Ohio, on October 19, 1903, the son of Matt and Elizabeth Kramer. When a
lad of two years, he came to Ottoville with his parents, where the family resided for a number of years.
For some time he was employed as a clerk for the A. C. and Y. railroad at Delphos and for the last five
months he was employed at the Bending Company in that city. While he was employed there he made his home
during the week with his father and step-mother.
On June 23, 1931, he was united in marriage to Miss Colene Niedecken, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Harry
Niedecken at Ottoville. Before working for the Bending Company he was employed at the Millie Café at Ottoville.
He is survived by his widow; his father and step-mother, at Delphos; two brothers, Arthur, of North Baltimore,
Ohio, and Ambrose, of Cambridge. He was preceded in death by his mother, a sister and a brother.
Funeral services were held in the Immaculate Conception church at Ottoville Monday morning at nine o’clock.
Rev. Henry Gerwert officiated, burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Services For Mr. Honigford
Held Tuesday Morning In Ottoville Church
Funeral services for John Honigford sr., of two miles northwest of Ottoville, were held Tuesday morning at
nine o’clock in the Immaculate Conception church at Ottoville. Mr. Honigford passed away at his home Saturday
morning at two-twenty o’clock
He had been ill for some time and eight months ago submitted to an operation at St. Vincent’s hospital,
Toledo, and a month later underwent a second operation at St. Rita’s hospital, Lima.
Mr. Honigford was born on a farm northwest of Ottoville on January 17, 1863, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Barney
Honigford. He was seventy-eight years of age. On October 17, 1893, he was married to Miss Anna Eberle. He
spent all of his life in the vicinity of Ottoville.
He is survived by his wife; five sons, John Jr., Ben, Clement and Joseph, all of near Ottoville, Gilbert at home;
two daughters, Mrs. Mary Weber, of near Ottoville, and Mrs. Sabina Miller, Cloverdale and twenty-four
grandchildren. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Rev. Henry Gerwert pastor of Ottoville church officiated the last rites, and interment was made in the parish
cemetery.

Last Rites At Ottoville
Funeral For Aged Lady Held Tuesday
Funeral rites for Mrs. Elizabeth Haselman of Ottoville, were held Tuesday morning at nine o’clock in the
Immaculate Conception Catholic church at Ottoville, the burial was made in the parish cemetery.
Mrs. Haselman passed away Sunday morning at two o’clock at the home of her son, Joseph, four miles
northwest of Ottoville. Her death followed an illness of three months.
Mrs. Haselman was born in Cincinnati on January 5, 1858, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Dickman, and
when her death occurred she was eighty-three years, three months and eight days of age.
She was married to Henry Haselman fifty-five years ago, and he preceded her in death fourteen years ago.
She is survived by the son, Joseph; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Linger, of Delphos, and Mrs. Fred Wendeln, of
Maria Stein; twenty-five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter;
three sisters and a brother.

Rites Held At Ottoville
John Schneider Services Held Friday
Funeral services were held on Friday morning of last week in the Immaculate Conception church at Ottoville
for John Schneider, who died at his home in that village on Tuesday night. He suffered a stroke of paralysis in
January and had been seriously ill since that time.
Mr. Schneider was born in Ottoville on January 31, 1865, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Schneider. He was
seventy-six years of age. On May 17, 1894, he was married to Carolyn Sanders at Ottoville. He spent all of his
life in the community of Ottoville.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elias Kruse, Elida; Mrs. Robert Kiefer, Lima; three sons, Leo, of Ft.
Wayne; Gregory of Ottoville, and Elmer, at home, and twelve grandchildren. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs.
John Berelsman, Continental; Mrs. Albert Green, Monroe, Michigan, and Mrs. Elizabeth Conley, Maybee,
Michigan. Two daughters, a brother, two sisters, and three step-brothers preceded him in death.
Father Henry Gerwert officiated at the funeral services and interment was made in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Perrin Passed Away
Funeral Held At Ottoville Thursday Morning
Mrs. Margaret Perrin, esteemed resident of Ottoville, died Monday evening at eight o’clock at her home in that
village. She had been bedfast for six weeks and had been failing since she suffered a stroke of paralysis two
years ago.
Mrs. Perrin was born on March 29, 1856, in Monterey township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Harris. In
January, 1875, she was married to Andrew Perrin at Ottoville. The couple resided on a farm north of Ottoville
until 1914 when they moved to town. Mr. Perrin died in 1924.
She is survived by five children, Mrs. Louis Smith, William and Henry Perrin, of Ottoville; Louis, of Cushing,
Oklahoma, and Albert, who resided with his mother; a brother, Aaron Harris, of Delphos; fifteen grandchildren,
fifty-six great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Three children, a brother and two sisters also preceded her into eternity. She was eighty-five years of age.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at nine o’clock in the Immaculate Conception Catholic church at
Ottoville and burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Last Rites At Ottoville
Held Friday Morning In Catholic Church
Funeral services were held Friday morning in the Immaculate Conception church at Ottoville for Mrs. John
Kehres, who died last Tuesday in St. Rita’s hospital, Lima, after an illness of one week.
Mrs. Kehres, a lifelong resident of the Ottoville community, was born at Ottoville on September 25, 1867, the
daughter of Bernard and Clara Helmkamp. She was united in marriage to John Kehres, son of Sebastian and
Barbara Kehres, on June 6, 1893. Following their marriage they moved to there present home located a mile and
a half east of Ottoville.
She is survived by her husband; six children, Casimer, Hilda and Mildred, at home; Mrs. Frank Rekart,
Ottoville; Henrietta, a school teacher at Sebastian and Sister Mary Reginalda, C.PP. S., Salem Heights. Three
grandchildren, a half-brother and three half-sisters also survive. Two daughters, a brother and a half-sister
preceded her in death.
The rites were held at nine o’clock and burial was made in St. Mary’s cemetery.

J. G. Hoersten Rites Held
Father Of Large Family Died Sunday
Joseph George Hoersten, lifelong and prominent resident of the Ottoville community, died at his home, two
and one-half miles southwest of Ottoville Sunday morning shortly before eleven o’clock. He had been seriously ill
for a month.
Mr. Hoersten was born at Ottoville on September 27, 1874, the son of Florenz and Elizabeth Hoersten, and
was sixty-seven years of age at the time of his demise.
On June 27, 1988, he was married to Miss Theresa Kramer, and to this union three children were born,
Edward Hoersten and Mrs. Marie Ellerbrock, of Ft. Jennings, and Joseph F. Hoersten, Ottoville. Mrs. Hoersten
died on April 6, 1907.
On May 5, 1908, Mr. Hoersten was married to Anna Hilvers, and the following children by this marriage
survive; Clara, Ann, Victoria, Clarence, Julia, Elizabeth, Hugo, Barbara and Vincent, all at home; Anthony, Felix
and Mrs. Matilda Herman, of Ottoville, and Lawrence Hoersten, of Columbus Grove. He also leaves a step-son,
Isadore, two brothers and four sisters, Louis, John, Minnie, Theresa, Christine and Mary, all of Ottoville, and
seventeen grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at nine o’clock in the Immaculate Conception church at
Ottoville and burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Child Dies At Ottoville
Kenneth Otte Passed Away Monday
Kenneth Lee, five months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Otte Jr., of two miles northwest of Ottoville, died at
the Otte home at eight o’clock Monday morning. The baby had been ill for the past week. Death was attributed to
pneumonia.
The child was born on May 23, 1941. In addition to the parents, a sister, Barbara Ellen, a brother Gerhard, at
home, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Otte Sr., Ottoville, and Mr. and Mrs. William Purdy, Delphos,
survive.
Services were held in Immaculate Conception church in Ottoville at nine o’clock Thursday morning. Burial was
made in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Died Sunday At Delphos
Mrs. Schramm Resided Near Ottoville
Mrs. Nellie Schramm, a former resident of Monterey township, died at her home in Delphos Sunday afternoon.
She suffered a stroke of paralysis two years ago, and one year ago suffered a fractured hip in a fall. She had
been seriously ill for about ten days.
Mrs. Schramm was born north of Delphos on December 4, 1868, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron
Huysman. On April 2, 1891, she was married to Jacob Schramm at Delphos. Following their marriage the couple
moved to a farm north of Ottoville where Mrs. Schramm resided until 1923. Her husband died in 1908. She was
seventy-two years of age.
She is survived by two sons, Aaron, of north of Ottoville; William of near Ft. Jennings, and a daughter,
Margaret, at home. She also leaves fifteen grandchildren, three half-sisters, a half-brother, and a step-brother.
Services were held at ten o’clock Wednesday morning in the Lutheran church at Delphos and burial was
made in Calvary cemetery at Ft. Jennings

J. C. Wannemacher Was Former Mayor
Served Community
Funeral Held Friday At Ottoville
Last earthly rites for Joseph C. Wannemacher, former mayor and businessman of Ottoville were held Friday
morning at nine o’clock in the Immaculate Conception Catholic church at Ottoville, and interment was made in the
parish cemetery.
Mr. Wannemacher passed away late Tuesday night of last week at the home of a daughter, Mrs. C. J. Ellis, in
Mt. Prospect Illinois. Pneumonia was the cause of his demise.
He was born in Ottoville on December 23, 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wannemacher. He received
his education in the Ottoville schools and attended the high school at Ottawa for two years, and taught school for
a period of two years, before he went to work in is fathers hardware and implement store.
In 1886 he became associated with his father in that business. After his father’s death, Mr. Wannemacher and
his brothers continued to operate the business until ten years ago when it was dissolved.
Mr. Wannemacher served as president of the Ottoville bank for a number of years, was clerk and mayor of
the village of Ottoville for some time; served as clerk of Monterey township, was also a member of the Ottoville
board of education, and served as a member of the building committee of the curt house in Ottawa at the time of
the erection of the current building.
Mr. Wannemacher was married on May 8, 1878, to Miss Anna Schneider. His wife died in 1928 and for the last
few years he had been making his home with his daughter in Illinois. He was seventy-nine years of age.
He is survived by three sons, Martin, of Columbus; Urban and Arnold, of Ottoville; four daughters, Sister Mary
Antoinette, of Cincinnati; Mrs. George Auer, Cleveland, Mrs. George King, Ottoville, and Mrs. Ellis, of Illinois; a
sister, Miss Fanny Wannemacher, Ottoville; a brother, Stephen Wannemacher, Lima and fifteen grandchildren.
John Kemper Passed Away
Aged Glandorf Resident Buried Monday
John Kemper aged and well known resident of Glandorf, died Thursday evening of last week at nine-fifteen
after an illness of only two hours. Mr. Kemper, although ailing for the past two years, was apparently enjoying his
normal health on Thursday and had spent the time mowing the lawn during the afternoon. He suffered a heart
attack shortly after seven o’clock from which he failed to rally.
Mr. Kemper was born at Ottoville on May 15, 1859, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Kemper. He came to
Glandorf when a young man and was united in marriage to Miss Mary Nachtinagle in that village on September
24, 1886. This union observed their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary this year. He was eighty-two years of age.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. John Harriman, of Ottawa; Mrs. Ohmer Slyder, of Detroit,
Michigan; Mrs. Roy Todd of Dayton; a son Ben Kemper of Knoxville Tenn.; a brother, Henry Kemper of Dayton; a
sister,
Mrs. Anna Gulker of Glandorf, and two grandchildren. Two daughters, Josephine and Dora, and three brothers
and two sisters preceded him death.
Last rites were held Monday morning in St. John’s Catholic church at nine o’clock. Rev. Otto Mueller, the
pastor, officiated, and burial was made in the parish cemetery.
Death Calls Dr. E. C. Wurst
Young Defiance Doctor Was Born At Ottoville
Funeral services for Dr. Elmer C. Wurst, Defiance physician, who died Wednesday of last week in his home,
were held Saturday morning at nine o’clock in the St. Mary’s Catholic church in that city.
Dr. Wurst’s death was caused by sub-acute bacterial endocarditis a malady from which he had been affected
for many months and which caused his retirement from the medical preofession in Defiance last January. He is
survived by his wife; three children, John Charles, Elmer James and Mary Josephine, all at home; his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph P. Wurst, Ottoville; a sister Genevieve Wurst, Columbus, and two brothers, W. W. Wurst,
Dayton and Joseph B. Wurst, Ottoville.
Dr. Wurst was born in Ottoville on May 11, 1908. After his graduation from Ottoville high school, he went to
Ohio State University, where he persued college pre-medical studies for three years. He then entered the
medical school at St. Louis University, where he received his bachelor of science at the end of his first year and
the degree of doctor of medicine in 1932. He served his internship at St. Vincent’s hospital in Toledo and was
then on the staff of a Pittsburgh hospital for a short time before locating in Defiance in1933. He was married to
Miss Beatty Beard at Defiance on March 2, 1935.
He was a member of the Defiance County Medical society, the Ohio State Medical Association and the
Defiance council Knights of Columbus. During his seven years of practice in Defiance he enjoyed an enviable
reputation as a physician and surgeon. His remains were laid to rest in the cemetery in that city.
